ALL IN A NIGHT AND A DAY

Firstly...

Despair turns to joy
     In a threshold moment.

Tired, dispirited, not now.
     From where did the energy,
The clarity,
     The action, that blissful over-ride,
Ascend?
     From that threshold moment.

Then...

Quiet, tired, even-time
Over two fine pints,
The 'Green Man' sublime.
Homeward, humming,
Nonsense music, happy
Cascades of notes amid
Inner laughter
Poking secure fun at
Averted disaster.

On waking...

Mist morning damp-cold
Slumped like blankets,
Dank, dismal daybreak.
Autumn red-ferns,
Beech-yellows lift
The mists and wispy
Wood-smoke clouds
Are perfect foils to a
Limpid blue that
Heralds November;
With muted brass.

Almost finally...

Count hours till you are here,
Trains pass, passing people
To everywhere.
Unknown warriors, cowards,
Heroes all.
Destination unknown, foreign,
Homes for all.
You will step from a train,
Not long from now.
Known, beautiful, warm,
Loving always.
Destination unknown, foreign,
To you.
To me,
Home, and I fulfil the Vow.
